Wise Words for a Sydney Backpacker

0 Flares 0 Flares ×

‘The World is a book. Those who do not travel read only a page’. – Saint Augustine

As those of you who read a previous article of mine will know, I recently turned 23. On the card sent over from my lovely brother, he had written the quote above.

I loved this, as he knew I would. Maybe I am a bit of a hippy/soppy idiot at heart.

So I thought it might be nice to share the hippy vibe and get some inspirational quotes down for us Sydney backpackers. If you are ever feeling low, or lonely, or thinking ‘why the hell have I chosen to travel 10,000 miles away from home and share a room with stinking boys and be woken up at 3 am every morning and live on practically no money and pasta every day’, this is why…

‘It is better to travel well than to arrive’. – Buddha

‘If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness and fears’. –
Cesare Pavese

‘We travel, some of us forever, to seek other states, other lives, other souls’. – Anais Nin

‘Travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education; in the elder, a part of experience’. – Francis Bacon

‘Never go on trips with anyone you do not love’. –
Ernest Hemingway

‘To travel is discover that everyone is wrong about other countries’. – Aldous Huxley

‘Like all great travellers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen’. – Benjamin Disraeli

‘No one realises how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow’. – Lin Yutang

‘Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.’ – Mark Twain

‘To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted’. – Bill Bryson

Sometimes it can be hard to travel; you may feel a million miles from home, or alone and missing your loved ones, or without home comforts, but keep the faith! As my mother says, it is all character building. Bloody character building. But I do believe that it is important to experience setbacks as well as amazing highs so that you can appreciate the highlights of your trip and recognise how fantastic your experiences in Sydney and elsewhere are. You are a backpacker, a traveller, and soon will have the worldly wisdom and open mind enough to create your own inspirational words of wisdom (well, maybe!).

Keep exploring, adventuring, searching, discovering and travelling. What you’re doing is amazing and we are all so lucky to be privileged enough to have our own worldwide adventures. So go forth and prosper (!) and remember, ‘Not all those who wander are lost’. – Anon.
