Top 10 Things For Backpackers to Do in Sydney

0 Flares 0 Flares ×

Sydney has endless amounts to see or do regardless of your budget, and many of the biggest highlights here are free to enjoy. The following are 10 of the best things for backpackers to do when visiting Sydney.

Visit the Botanic Gardens

The Royal Botanic Gardens is one of the most beautiful parts of Sydney, and the perfect place to go for a walk, read a book or have a picnic with a friend. Located just on the edge of the magnificent Sydney Harbour, this gorgeous location is free to visit, but is closed to the public after dark.  Only 5 minutes walk from the Jolly Swagman Backpackers

Walk around Circular Quay

Circular Quay is where the CBD meets the harbour, and there are always thousands of locals and tourists alike streaming through this area. From here you also have a stunning view of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, so grab a coffee from one of the dozens of cafes and slowly stroll around this magnificent setting. – The walk to Circular Quay from the Jolly Swagman Backpackers is about 15 minutes direct, but we suggest you take your time, enjoy the sites and cover the distance in about an hour or more, with your camera at the ready!

Catch the ferry to Manly

Everyone should experience this ferry ride at least once, as it is the perfect way to get a decent appreciation of the harbour. The destination isn’t half bad either, with Manly providing shopping, dining, and one of Sydney’s most popular beaches.

Swim at Bondi Beach

Going for a dip at Bondi is almost a rite of passage for backpackers visiting Australia, so don’t leave Sydney before you’ve done it. There are also some fantastic backpacker hostels right at Bondi Beach, which are perfect for allowing you to go for a swim and then simply walk across the road to your hostel accommodation. If you have come to Australia to swim, you can set up a nice base for yourself at Bondi Beach.  You can reach Bondi Beach by bus from the Jolly Swagman backpackers Sydney Hostel and takes approximately 25 minutes depending on traffic.

Go to the Cross

Kings Cross is an infamous part of Sydney, known for its strip clubs, nightclubs, bars and seedy underbelly. It is an area well worth seeing. During the day the Cross is far less dodgy, and being located next to some of Sydney’s most exclusive areas, is well worth having a walk around.  The Jolly Swagman backpackers is located in a quiet and beautiful street called Orwell street – close to the action but far enough away to escape when you are done partying.

Have a beer in The Rocks

The Rocks is one of the oldest parts of Sydney, and home to some of the city’s most interesting and lively pubs. Even though the beer certainly isn’t cheap, it is well worth dropping by for at least one.

Go to Chinatown

Like Chinatowns around the world, the food here is cheap and amazing, and for a boost of culture to your Sydney visit, nothing beats walking through one of Australia’s oldest Chinatown districts.

Walk around Newtown

Formerly a poor inner city working class area, Newtown has become one of the trendiest and most vibrant parts of Sydney, and has a vibe unlike any other part of the city. Between the second-hand clothing stores, multicultural food options and even an anarchist bookstore, Newtown will easily keep you occupied for a day or two.

Ride through Centennial Park

A leisurely way to spend a couple hours in Sydney is by renting a bike and cruising around this huge inner city park.

Walk across the Harbour Bridge

Whether you have the courage and the cash to go over the top, or you just want to walk across at road level, make a point of walking across the bridge in some manner — it’s a classic Sydney experience.

Having a great time and seeing a lot in Sydney doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money, making it the perfect place to spend a bit of time on any Australian backpacking adventure. With so many backpackers here at any one point, it’s always easy to find out the latest and greatest when it comes to cheap thrills in this amazing city.
