Some parts of the world are far more popular with backpackers than others, but few places can compete with Sydney when it comes to being a backpacking, Mecca. Regardless of the weather or the time of year, there are always thousands of backpackers in and around Sydney at any point in time. The following is a brief look at some of the many features that make Sydney such a wildly popular place for backpackers from all over the world.

The beaches

Considering that most young people’s idea of a good time is hanging out on a beautiful beach, it is little wonder they flock to Sydney in huge numbers each and every year. Whether you are looking to swim, surf, sunbathe or snorkel, Sydney has a large and wide variety of beaches options. Many of Sydney’s beaches are easily accessible from the various backpacker hostels downtown, and there are even Sydney hostels, in places like Bondi and Manly, that are located practically right on the beach.

The nightlife

Sydney’s nightlife is a big part of the reason why backpackers have continued to make the journey from all over the world to this vibrant harbour city, and whether you are looking for rock, hip-hop, house or trance music, you are bound to find it. Kings Cross has played a significant role in luring those backpackers, with super-cheap accommodation located next to 24-hour clubs and bars, making for a classic backpacker experience in what is one of Australia’s most famous red-light districts.

The Harbour

Sydney is blessed with one of the world’s most beautiful harbours, framed by the iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House, making it one of the most famous and recognisable symbols of Australia. This gorgeous harbour has drawn backpackers from all over the world like a magnet for decades.

The harbour area has something for everyone, whether you want to grab a coffee and stroll around to the Royal Botanic Gardens, catch a ferry across to Manly, climb the Harbour Bridge, have a beer in The Rocks or just hang out and people watch in Circular Quay — and you can be sure to always find a large number of backpackers.

The festivals

Sydney puts on some very impressive festivals throughout an average year, including the elaborate Mardi Gras, the huge Festival of Sydney, the rocking Big Day Out and the hilarious Comedy Festival to name but a few. These festivals are a big reason why so many backpackers end up making the trip down here. If you are planning on doing a backpacking trip to Sydney, be sure that you time your visit to coincide with the best Sydney festivals.

The food

Backpackers are always looking for cheap, good food, and Sydney delivers in a big way on this front, with some of the most creative, varied and great value food you will find anywhere in the world. Even on the cheapest backpacker budget, there are a huge amount of tasty food options in Sydney, and there are more than a few cheap and tasty drink options to wash that food down with as well.
