A Backpackers In Sydney Guide To Enjoying Downtime

0 Flares 0 Flares ×

While travelling is often a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a full itinerary of going up the Sydney Tower Eye, walking through the Royal Botanical Gardens, hiking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and visiting the Taronga Zoo, can exhaust even the most motivated of backpackers in Sydney.  Face it, although travelling is often a much-needed getaway from the daily grind, it can often result in sensory overload, tired feet (don’t forget jet lag), and an overwhelming need to have some downtime that doesn’t require hiking, climbing, or spending the day in the Sydney sun.

Whatever you do, don’t feel guilty for enjoying a little downtime. Remember, you more sights to see tomorrow. Take a break, relax, enjoy, and disconnect from the hustle and bustle with some of these activities with new backpacker friends you’ve met (here at the Jolly Swagman Backpackers):

Go See a Movie

Want to plop down in a comfortable seat, sit and a cool, dark room, and be entertained for a few hours? Why not check out one of Sydney’s movie theatres. Whether you’re viewing the latest Captain America movie or a documentary on Humpback Whales, be prepared to be blown away by the “up close and personal” experience at IMAX Theater Sydney; remember, It’s not every day that you can say that you saw the summer’s blockbuster while travelling through Sydney.  Tuesdays are often the cheap movie ticket days – backpackers and locals often like to take advantage of the special price.

Feel like enjoying a movie experience outdoors? If you head to the Starlight Cinema, you can catch summer screenings of new and old films and enjoy pizza and popcorn in their pop-up outdoor theatre. The Moonlight Cinema also offers an entertaining outdoor viewing experience in their open-air amphitheatre.

If all else fails and you just want to take a break in your backpacker hostel room, check out some of your favourite streaming sites like Netflix, iTunes, or Google Play with our free wifi service!  at the Jolly Swagman Backpackers, we also have an awesome TV room for you to chill out and relax in

Hit Up the Star Casino

You could hit up the Blackjack table or try your luck at Roulette when you visit Sydney’s Star Casino or you can play the ever popular pokie machine at a bar.  If you don’t feel like gambling, its almost as much fun just to watch the hoards of people trying their luck!  If you’re in need of some real downtime and don’t feel like playing tourist anymore for the day, take the opportunity to unwind. Check out some online casino games, enjoy your favourite casino game or try out a new one, it’s a good way to learn the rules and tactics and you never know you might just hit the jackpot!

Relax By The Water

It would be a shame to visit Sydney and not get a chance to truly appreciate the beauty of the ocean. While there’s a nice view of the water, practically everywhere you turn, take a moment to sit down, relax, and enjoy a warm sandy beach or a dip in the ocean. There are opportunities to snorkel and swim at Clovelly beach, but there’s nothing wrong with staying at the water’s edge and enjoy the breathtaking sunset after a busy day.

If you want to experience tranquillity without going in the water, don’t forget to check out the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium. Nothing is more relaxing than sitting and watching over 700 different marine species swim over and around you.  If you do, be sure to check with the reception at the Jolly Swagman before heading out, because we often have discounted tickets and coupons for you to use.
