The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras is an annual gay pride parade and festival for the gay and lesbian community in Sydney, and is the largest such event in the world.
The Mardi Gras Festival lasts one month starting in February with events daily (such as fair days, individual and team sports, cabarets, comedy, music, theatre, etc.) leading up to the famous PARADE and massive dance party on the last day of the festival, normally the first Saturday in March.
The parade event is hugely supported in Sydney and every year guests at the Jolly Swagman Backapckers Hostel get into the spirit and head to the parade – quite often dressed up! The parade begins at 8pm at Hyde park, travells along Oxford Street, through Taylor Square and down Flinders Street to Moore Park where Australia’s largest dance party takes place!! All this is walking distance from the Jolly Swagman Backpackers Hostel in Kings Cross (about 8 minutes walk).
