THIS WEEK AT THE JOLLY SWAGMAN BACKAPCKERS SYDNEY HOSTEL:
An extremely busy week at the Jolly Swagman Sydney Hostel; the Sydney Masters Games and Parklife music festival have pushed for one of the largest demands for accommodation the Swagman backpackers Sydney has seen this year! If you are wishing to extend your booking at any time, please do so as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment (of which there was quite a bit of this weekend!).
Check out the colourful new display of attractions in Western Australia that are brightening up the main corridor, if you can see yourself in one of the photos feeding sharks, exploring the desert and many beaches or chilling out in Perth, come on over to reception to book a bus ticket, accommodation, tours and more!
THIS WEEK IN SYDNEY:
Delighted or disgruntled, Parklife is going ahead on Sunday as planned come rain, hail or shine. Those not taking part in the festival might decide to plan their visit to Centennial Park for another day as the crowds will be intense.
Why not take advantage of this awful weather and see some of the cultural highlights often missed in Sydney. The Swagman is just minutes away from the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Australian Museum, the Australian Maritime Museum and loads more. All are currently displaying very exciting exhibitions, especially the Australian Museum's Ancient Egypt exhibit with over 200 artefacts from around the Globe.
In terms of entertainment, many cinemas adorn the streets of Sydney that cater to both blockbuster and arthouse tastes, such as the Verona, Academy Twin and heritage listed Chauvel cinemas on Oxford St.
Many who come to Sydney love to see the Opera House, but there is no way to experience it other than to attend an event or performance at it. I can not express my excitement at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas that is starting this weekend at the House; heavily discounted tickets are available for students ($10!) to such talks as "Should drugs be legal?", "are Islamic values and polygamy good for Australia", "is the indigenous genocide nearly complete?"- go on; release your inner nerd.
SYDNEY SPORTS:
Why not try Bikram Yoga- a variety of yoga moves performed for 90 minutes in a 40 degree hot room. Great for everything about you, you will certainly feel incredible after if not like an ant under sunlight coming through a magnifying glass while you are doing it. The Bikram Yoga college of India is located on Oxford St and ahs a special introductory offer of a ten day pass for a bargain $17. See reception for more information and find out when other swagman guests attend!
SYDNEY WEATHER:
Did I say possible showers last week? More like terenchel pour-down all weekend! Our good friends at the Australian Bureau of meteorology are the bringers of bad news claiming showers are unlikely to clear until Saturday, with a slight exception to Tuesday morning. Minimum temperatures of 7 degrees, maximum 22.
SYDNEY TIP OF THE WEEK:
A fascinating article in ‘The Economist' over the weekend noted a report from U.S. Federal Treasurer Timothy Geithner who claimed that the recent increase in the value of shares in the goon industry, (primary consumer market being the Jolly Swagman Backpackers Hostel, Sydney) could just pull the U.S. economy out of recession. On a not so interesting note, local authorities have reminded the Swagman guests that drinking in public places (outside the Swagman) is illegal and can incur a maximum penalty of $550.
And why would you want to. The Jolly Swagman Sydney Backpackers Hostel is located in Kings Cross, the heart of Sydney's nightlife. Yes, some bars are expensive and don't fit the backpacker's bill; but there are hundreds of cheap bars and pubs around the area that reception is more than happy to recommend, many open 24 hours. Or, check out Albert's Sydney PUB BLOG on the blog page of the Swagman website.
