I remember when I was younger and my perception of Kings Cross  was that of a seedy uninviting area of Sydney, and whenever it was brought up in conversation between school friends it was more of an inquisitive nature and that of the unknown.

I was 18 when I first went out to experience the nightlife that has enthralled the area of Kings Cross. The bright neon lights that lined the streets and the unusual people that hung out on the sidewalks entranced me.

I had a feeling that my first initial perception from when I was younger might be very accurate. However once I took a step back I noticed that it was no different then the nightlife in Darling Harbour or the City Centre and that the stereotype of the area is still very much alive due to its colourful history.

During the 1960's hundreds of servicemen on rest and rehabilitation leave descended into Sydney each week in search of entertainment, due to the proximity of the army naval base to Kings Cross it quickly got its reputation as Sydney's ‘red-light district'. A lot has changed since then but it still carries the ‘red-light' label.

Since the turn of the century Kings Cross has witnessed a large number of real estate developments. This has resulted in demographic changes as affluent professionals are increasingly residing in the area and are significantly altering the character of the area.

Since I've been working at the Jolly Swagman backpackers Sydney Hostel I've noticed incredible changes to the area and its like a light has been switched on and it has finally been recognised as an attractive, happening area! Its stepped up and cleaned up its act and will only keep improving.

Please let us know your thoughts and experiences of Kings Cross especially if you have stayed at the Jolly Swagman Backpackers Sydney Hostel
