Hostelling started over 100 years ago when a German teacher used to take his classes on hiking trips, which would include nights away. On one of these excursions, bad weather caught them and they had to find shelter. A local school gave them accommodation for the night. This is when the teacher realized what a great idea it would be to have a local villages hostel during holidays to accommodate hisbackpackers”.

Since then hostelling has become a great lifestyle, offering budget accommodation to give backpackers the opportunity to explore other countries. Hostellingaccommodation places are sometimes called backpackers hostels, particularly in Australia and New Zealand (and often just ‘backpackers’).

Hostels rent beds to guests, usually bunk beds in a dormitory and share bathroom, lounge and sometimes a kitchen. Rooms can be mixed or single sex. Private rooms may also be available. Sydney hostels offer all types of accommodation options. The Jolly Swagman Backpackers Sydney is a great example and is located in the backpacker center of Kings Cross. There’s a great choice of dormitories and private rooms, a large TV Room and communal kitchen and a fun-filled entertainment guide to keep you busy.

Hostels provide a great social atmosphere, so whether you are traveling with friends or by yourself you are always likely to meet new friends and hear fellow travelers stories.

Jolly Swagman Backpackers Sydney advice: Continue this great history of hostelling and enjoy all that backpacking has to offer.
