  • How do we get to the Jolly Swagman from the Airport?

    We provide a FREE pick up for all guests who have booked to stay with us for 2 nights or more. Please call us on 1800 805 870 (toll free) when you arrive at Sydney airport. The Shuttle Bus operates between 5am and 8.30pm.

    If your flight arrives after 8.30pm, you will have to make your own way to the hostel - either jump on the train or one of the airport shuttle buses (operating until 12am). Our Jolly reception is open 24 HOURS. Any problems or question please don't hesitate to contact us!

  • What’s it like staying in a backpacker’s hostel? – Its my first time ….

    Staying in a hostel is a fun and welcoming place to stay, it's a great place to meet people and to share travel stories! The idea behind backpacker hostels is to provide cheap, clean, simple accommodation for people who are trying to save their money and to see as much of a country (or city) as they can. The accommodation is clean but generally people only spend time in their rooms while sleeping - during the day you can take advantage of our common rooms where you can chill out and meet new friends.

  • If I am by myself, how will I meet people? Will I be lonely?

    No! There are great, organized nights/days out where you can meet other friendly backpackers. We also have large communal areas - there is a comfy TV room where you can chill on the beanbags and either watch a DVD or choose from the many TV channels on FOX/SKY. Or use the library exchange and kick back and relax in our outside seating area and enjoy the sun!

  • If I stay in a shared room – what do I do with my things to keep them safe?

    Remember that everyone is in the same situation as you and there is a certain level of trust between travellers, that being said, we would recommend you always take care of your valuables. Our dormitory rooms (4 and 6 share) have individual lockers for your use. All you have to do is provide your own lock (we have some for sale in reception) and all your valuables will be safe! We also have safety deposit boxes you can hire quite cheaply to put your belongings in.

  • How far is the Jolly Swagman Backpackers from the city centre?

    A nice stroll through the Botanical Gardens will take you to the city centre, taking in Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and all the other major attractions! If you power walk it will take you 15 minutes but we suggest you amble and enjoy the sites!
    You can also opt to take the train or bus to the CBD which takes just minutes and is very cheap!
    Kings cross is also an exceptionally well built up area offering supermarkets, banks, post office, shops, take away restaurants, bars, clubs, cafes, etc. You'll literally find everything you need on your doorstep.

  • What do I get for free?

  • Is linen included?

    Yes, we also provide blankets and pillows.

  • Should I bring my own towel?

    Yes. We do not have towel hire.

  • How do I do my laundry?

    We have washing machines and dryers for your use. Also laundry powder is available to buy.

  • What other facilities are there at the hostel?

    There's a large well-stocked kitchen and dining room, an outside sitting area, a comfy TV Room with FOX/SKY, book exchange, Internet/WIFI, Xbox, board games, laundry, Job board, Travel desk, Pay phones.

  • How will I get a Tax file number (TFN)?

    If you are planning to work in Australia then you will need a Tax File Number (TFN). This is required by employers to pay tax on your behalf.
    The best way to apply for it is on the Internet. A TFN takes up to 3 weeks to process and be delivered (via postal service) once you have applied. You will require a postal address when you apply.     Click here for more information.

  • Is it easy to get work in Sydney?

    Yes! We have a great Job Board and Job Folder. We also get calls from Business' needing workers. Click HERE for more info on working in Sydney. Employment and recruitment agencies are listed with lots of opportunity to register.

  • Can I park my car at Jolly Swagman Backpackers?

    Unfortunately, we do not have a car park to offer our guests.

    There are, however, two options for parking:

    1. A security car park located 2 minutes walk away from the hostel. All Jolly guests get a discount off the daily rate (just come to reception to get your parking card stamped).

    2. There is some free and unlimited street parking located about 2 minutes walk from the Jolly Swagman Backpackers.

    Normally we would suggest you come to the hostel first to check in, and we will direct you to these parking locations.

  • Where can I book day tours and other travel?

    We have a great Travel desk at Reception, where we can help you with all your travel needs. The choices are endless. Our staff is all knowledgeable on the local area, with ideas for what you can do and see in our beautiful city. We can help you with any information you need, just ask us!
